Bored at Work? Here’s How to Use it to Fuel Your Next Move

Boredom could serve you well.

Starting a new job can be demanding, exhilarating, stressful and challenging. But what do you do when your role is established, the excitement has gone and your daily tasks feel mundane?

Life coach, business mentor and Joy of Business facilitator Gabrielle Vena maintains it’s important to act when the boredom sets in. “Boredom is simply feedback from your mind; it’s telling you that it’s time to adjust what you are doing,” Gabrielle explains. “If you make yourself unhappy enough at something, you can eventually become aware that there’s a need for change,” she adds.

Interestingly, recent studies seem to agree that being bored can be a great precursor to being productive, with boredom actually increasing the ability to think creatively. The trick, says Gabrielle, is to recognise when you’re bored and be fearless enough to make the necessary changes.

“I have changed career many times in my life, and it’s been because of my unwillingness to remain bored or disenchanted. The concept is the same in a successful career. Your job should be congruent with what excites you; there should be something in your business that is new, creative and juicy that you have a natural enthusiasm for.”

Gabrielle shares some critical signs to watch for that will tell you it’s time to get out of the rut and start making some creative changes:

1. Heaviness and dread

Severe procrastination, a sense of heaviness and feelings of dread when facing the day ahead.  “It’s like having a Monday morning sense, but every day of the week,” Gabrielle explains.

2. Distraction

When you catch yourself daydreaming, scrolling through social media a lot, or focusing on things other than the tasks at hand.

3. Escapism

Spending time looking at holiday destinations, or spending excess time on hobbies. “When you have a joy and sense of connection with your job, it can feel as fulfilling as any hobby or vacation,” Gabrielle remarks.

4. Avoidance

You constantly avoid tasks like completing reports, or dealing customers and complaints. “When you have enthusiasm for what you do, there is a willingness to deal with your least favourite tasks because, overall, you are joyful in your endeavour,” Gabrielle says.

5. Anger, sadness/melancholy, emotional numbness

“These emotions are feedback that there is some ‘lie’ in our life that we are not acknowledging,” Gabrielle explains. “We know something deep inside, but we are hiding that truth from ourselves.”

6. Losing clients, losing money, poor performance

An unexplained downturn in productivity can be due to psychological causes. “We are capable of unconsciously self-sabotaging our job through our actions and decisions,” warns Gabrielle. “If this is happening, it could be you are trying to bring your awareness to the reality that you don’t actually want to do this anymore.”

Gabrielle encourages individuals to be comfortable making unexpected or unusual changes to their career, if it feels right. “There’s such an expectation these days that if you start something, you are going to stick with it forever. But what if that’s not true for you? It’s OK to not finish what you started, it’s OK to not do something permanently, if those things no longer excite you.”

She also advises that change doesn’t have to be big to be effective. “When making creative changes, you don’t have to throw the baby out with the bathwater – there might be something small that needs to be added or removed. A tweak. But it’s equally OK if you jump tracks entirely,” Gabrielle says.

“And remember, the change you make might not be the one change that fixes everything. Have a commitment to yourself and your happiness. If you have a sense that you’re in the right vein, but it’s not quite right, have the courage to ask questions and be willing to ‘play’ with different jobs to find what feels best,” she adds.
