From 2020 every plastic cup, plate and utensil in France will need to be compostable and made from biologically sourced materials. So specifies a new law, as part of the same plan that last year saw plastic bags banished from French grocery stores and markets. France is the first country to take (legal) aim at disposable tableware, but some argue that such laws violate European Union legislation around the free movement of goods. Yet, with predictions that by 2050 there’ll be more plastic than fish in the sea, here’s hoping the rest of the world takes note.
