In an industry where the options are less “sink or swim” and more “sink or keep your head above water”, it’s always refreshing to see creatives diving into print media. It can certainly be worthwhile (it worked out for us, didn’t it?) to try something a little different, which is why we’re happy to support another rule-breaker getting into the game.
A new magazine, aptly titled Shut Up And Take My Money, launched yesterday and is founded by our Issue 25 cover star Luc Wiesman, founder of the hugely popular men’s blog D’Marge. The new print product covers all things, well, things: delving deep into globally lauded products, brands and people, touted as the place to browse for those readers who “don’t know the difference between need and want” – so you can basically take our wallets right this second.
Unknowingly, Luc has been testing the waters for this new venture for the past few years and was met with measurable success from the dedicated readers of D’Marge. “Our online article series Shut Up and Take My Money has been incredibly successful for the past two years,” Luc explains of his decision to take on print. “Extending this into a print publication was more interesting and marketable than just another men’s mag on the shelves.”
Indeed, the print magazine follows much the same rule-breaking ethos behind the launch of D’Marge’s online counterpart.
“I thought they were rubbish,” he told Collective Hub in 2015 of the lifestyle media manscape when he launched D’Marge six years ago. “I still do. There’s a couple in the market that are doing great things, but a lot of it is quite frivolous.
“Even we, when we started, didn’t have [much] substance. Now that we’re getting bigger and there’s more than 25 contributors and six staff, and I’ve got time to actually think about where to take the business, we’re able to put more substance into articles and send people to cool places.”
