So you’ve decided to stay home this long weekend – good for you. A whole new world awaits in your very own home (and we’re not talking about Aladdin finally being on Netflix). Sure, you’ll listen to some new podcasts, read the latest pageturners (here are a few you can knock off in one weekend), read up on mindfulness (again) or dive headfirst into some docos, but there are a few other ways you can make your home feel new. Whether you want it to be task-filled or nothing-filled, it’s up to you but one thing’s for certain – you don’t need to leave the city to take a break.
If you still want to feel like you’re on holiday…
Build a fort
Or, as I like to call it, a couch bed. Basically, set up an area in your abode where you can head ‘off to’ during the day. The couch is the place you usually go to relax, and because it’s the place you always go, it won’t feel any different if you do it for four days instead of two. Build a fort with blankets and torches, fill it with books and speakers for podcasts or set up a tent or picnic section in your backyard (marquee lights and boho blankets are a must) and make that where you head for your switching off.
What about setting yourself a task to swim in five natural waterholes for the weekend? Planning for activity rather than area will force you to places you may never have been in your very own city.
Plan a treasure hunt
Depending on your palate preferences, write down a list of the food you most love to eat, then make a little plan on where to get that donut, that bowl of pho or that espresso martini. It doesn’t have to be food, though – what about setting yourself a task to swim in five natural waterholes for the weekend? Planning for activity rather than area will force you to places you may never have been in your very own city. (Also, this is the weekend to try geocaching – it’s outdoor treasure hunting and it’s perfectly mysterious.)
Got a friend who’s also bunkering down for a few days? Take over their pad for the weekend. You’ll find new local spots and have the feeling you’ve been somewhere when, really, you’ve only just had a friendless sleepover.

(Finally) take on those tasks you’ve been putting off
The inner organiser in you is just dying to get some stuff done, but you never have the time in a two-day weekend. So, now is as good a time as any.
Write a mega list of tasks you’ve been meaning to do and take no prisoners: that stuff you’ve been meaning to take to the op shop, that drawer you’ve been meaning to clean out, the tops of those cupboards you’re certain have a metropolis of dust taking over. You’ll feel completely cleansed by the time work rolls around again.
Take up a creative project
Paint a feature wall. Start a vegie garden. Force yourself to read that doorstopper-sized book.
