Back in January, I was going to be the next Steve Jobs. I had world domination pulsing through my veins and more creative energy than a 4-year-old jacked up on red frogs and fire engine spiders. I had plans as great as Presidency and goals as long as my legs. The world truly was my oyster and I was ready to show it exactly who was boss.
Fast-forward to March though, and the fireworks sure have fizzled, revealing a slighter more laissez-faire version of me. I’m not exactly dragging my feet along the asphalt each morning in a state of gloom and doom drudgery, but I’m also not exactly running this motha like Beyoncé suggested either. I’ve hit the end of the first quarter and am flat-lining like a golden retriever at midday.
It’s times like these that I love to take my key and stick it in the ignition, R. Kelly style. As the tunnel vision sets in, and enthusiasm can sometimes wane, I like to stop and look at my business(es) objectively and think, what can I do today to re-energise my business, and myself? What can I do that will reignite the impact we have and flip the way we do things on its head to take it to the next level?
If I’m truly honest with you, analysing and constructively critiquing my work is my preferred form of torture. I enjoy it just as some (crazy) people enjoy that 6am boot camp class that feels like vinegar to the eyeballs, yet inexplicably produces an array of positive effects.
It’s no secret that your business metabolism can get a little low or sluggish as the New Year energy starts to dwindle. It takes a lot of energy to keep the spark and continually strive for new levels of greatness. Inspirational slumps in business can be rough, and in some cases, a loss of kick-assery can be an absolute party-pooper. But if you are committed to sticking with your dream through thick and thin, then I have some good news for you: it’s totally possible to rekindle the excitement you once had.
Here’s my formula of 20 top tips to set fire to your biz in the best way possible.
FIND NEW EFFICIENCIES
Sometimes it’s the mundane tasks that bog you down the most. Brainstorm the most efficient way to do the everyday things and see what processes you can automate.
SET NEW GOALS
Perhaps it’s already time to set new goals and refocus your energy on new sights. Write them out and stick them to your wall in such an obnoxious way that you can’t miss them as you sit down to work each day.
SCHEDULE AN INSPO DAY
Every few weeks or so, I spend an entire day devouring inspiration. I gorge on podcasts, stalk my idols, tear apart magazines and graffiti books with highlighters. Filling up your cup with inspiration can produce an instant spark.
CREATE NEW CONTENT
Do a photoshoot, start a podcast, write a blog post, send an EDM. Let your audience know that you’re still alive and kicking.
INVEST IN YOURSELF
Go to an event, take a course, attend a conference and meet with your mentor. Because, you’re worth it (winky face).
EXPAND YOUR HORIZONS
Meet new peeps and get out of your bubble. You can leverage off someone else’s energy, and undoubtedly, learn new things to open doors of opportunity.
SPRUCE UP YOUR WEBSITE
Freshen up your copy and your images. Make sure that your current site is a reflection of your current you. Never stop evolving and creating!
REACH OUT TO OLD CONTACTS
It’s likely you already know someone who can take your business to new and exciting places. Flick them an email and catch up over a coffee.
REFLECT ON THE LAST FEW MONTHS
Sometimes to move forward, it’s important to look back. Think through your last 6 months. What worked, and conversely, what didn’t?
MAKEOVER YOUR SPACE
Your workspace needs to inspire the pants off you. Tidy up your desk, freshen up your inspo wall, add a plant, pump some tunes and sit up extra straight. Posture matters!
Book an Airbnb in a new place – simply pack your laptop and a stack of Caramello Koalas and you’re good to go. Get high on sugar and pump on some fresh work from a fresh perspective.
TIGHTEN YOUR BELT
Revisit your finances and on-going costs. Are there subscriptions you no longer need, but are still paying for? Are there specific areas in the business that are bleeding money? Too many Caramellos? Is that even possible? Spot the weak points and tighten up the ship.
SPLASH SOME CASH
Have you been dying to rebrand for the last 12 months? Splash some cash to take your brand to the next level and attract the people you’ve been dying to meet. Let it rain.
EAT YOUR DREAMS
Have a brainstorming session over lunch with your team. Reignite their goals, the company goals and reconnect with the vision. Nomnomnom!
HIT REFRESH ON YOUR OFFERINGS
Refresh and promote your list of products and services. What skills have you learnt that you can now add to your repertoire? Which services do you feel aren’t working for you anymore? Might be time to kick some to the curb, or park them for now.
GIVE AWAY A FREEBIE
Create some hype with a competition and give away your best offer for free. People LOVE a good freebie…(I know I do!).
UPDATE YOUR AUTOMATION
Those email auto-responders and sales funnel copy are most likely due for an update. Go through your existing touch points and ensure they are accurately reflecting your current plans.
ASK FOR FEEDBACK
Get in touch with customers, friends, mentors, staff and people you respect to give you some constructive criticism. What are you doing that could be done better? Start there.
SHOW YOURSELF OFF
Ask for client testimonials and create a checklist of those who have supplied and those to follow up. Add new testimonials to your website and take down those that aren’t so relevant anymore.
TAKE IT ALL IN
Sit and breathe. Spend a quiet moment reflecting on all the things that you are truly grateful for. This doesn’t have to be a Dalai Lama-inspired activity where you find yourself levitating, but just stopping to appreciate all that has come your way. All the hard work you’ve put into your business is a necessary act to re-energise your business and your life.
