In case you need one more reason to prioritise your workouts, here it is: It can build the mental muscles you need to become successful.
Not many people can say they’ve successfully dominated three vastly different industries, spanning fitness, Hollywood and politics. Arnold Schwarzenegger can. And his secret? He told the crowd in Melbourne at his sports and fitness expo, the Arnold Classic Australia, that his success all stems from what he learnt lifting weights.
“Every step of the way it helped me. It was the foundation of everything,” he said. “You learn about visualisation, you learn about discipline, you learn about camaraderie, you learn about not listening to the naysayers.”
He explained: “By visualising your goal, going after that goal you’ve visualised relentlessly, and finding great joy in every step of the way – every rep you do, every set you do, every sit-up you do, every chin-up you do – gets you one step closer.”
“[With weight training], you learn about visualisation, you learn about discipline, you learn about camaraderie, you learn about not listening to the naysayers.”
Arnie said he even learnt film scripts the same way he lifted weights – by doing reps. “It was also those same principles of success that I learnt in bodybuilding that helped me become governor of California,” he added.
Don’t just take Arnie’s word on the benefits of weight training. Results of a recent University of Sydney trial found that resistance training led to cognitive improvement. “The stronger people became, the greater the benefit for their brain,” lead author Dr Yorgi Mavros said.
Now, time to put that activewear to use…
