“My life has turned a full 180 degrees over the last 12 months,” says Pia Muehlenbeck, the fit and friendly founder of SLINKII athleticwear, model and self-professed “nerd” who not that long ago was practicing law. “I used to be that girl waking up at 7am, going to work and then coming home and going to sleep. However, since starting my own business every day is completely different from the last. No two days are the same as I’m involved in so many different aspects of the business but I think that’s what I love about running my own label.”

Between 5.30am to 6.00am
My alarm goes off. Despite loving the variety, I feel it’s pretty important to try and establish some type of routine, especially when you’re the only one holding yourself accountable. So I start the day early with exercise.
[My boyfriend] Kane and I start with yoga almost every day. Because I train weights so regularly, I find yoga not only clears my mind, but it also stretches out my muscles from the day before. So many people start the day lying in bed staring at social media. Personally I think this is so unhealthy, so we’ve both made the effort to start the day without technology. It’s a beautiful thing.
Now I hit the gym. I switch daily between cardio and weight training. If I have enough time, I’ll do both, but usually that doesn’t happen.
Today I have viewings, unrelated to SLINKII. A swimwear brand are looking to engage me to model for them, so we go look at the range, meet the PR firm and I get to pick my favourites to shoot in. (Dream morning, right?!)
Quick rush home to change and get glammed up. David Jones are showcasing a new label this afternoon.
Red carpet and photographers… I really should have dressed up a little more! Woops.
The show was incredible, but now we’ve got to rush back to SLINKII HQ, as I have a meeting with a new wholesaler.
Wholesaler meeting went well, they are going to take the full range of SLINKII Athletic and the new SLINKII Swim which is fantastic. It’s been a little daunting branching out from sportswear into swim, so I’m really happy that stockists (and our followers!) are liking what they see already. Now time to get packaging. I jump into our mini production line (it’s just myself, Lucy and Christina) and help the girls with all the orders from the day before. I’ve been looking at automatic shipping warehouses, but none of them put the amount of effort into packaging like my girls do, so for now, we spend every afternoon picking and packing like we’re wrapping presents for Christmas.
The sun is starting to set, and it looks incredible. Kane calls me and tells me the light is perfect, so I jump out of production and head home to change quickly. I’ve been asked to shoot some really beautiful dresses from Misha Collection, and with the sun the way it is today, we run (literally) to a beautiful spot we know in Surry Hills to take some ‘street style’ shots for Instagram.
I quickly select my favourite shots for Instagram and then jump on my Mac. It’s been such a hectic day that I’ve let my emails slip.
My boyfriend walks in with takeout. Bad boyfriend! But okay… I’ll eat it!
SWITCH OFF! Because I work with my boyfriend we have a designated ‘switch off’ time, where we shut our Macs and turn our iPhones to silent and have ‘us time’. It’s so easy to work ‘til bed when you run your own company, but we make sure we have time together without work so we don’t forget why we fell in love! It’s probably the most important time of the day for me.
